Bijan’s horse reared as a boar thundered from the pomegranate grove, tusks flashing and earth shivering beneath them; he felt the animal’s hot breath and tasted iron on his tongue as he threw his weight forward to steady the mount. Fear braided with resolve—if the boars reached the fields the villagers would lose more than crops. He acted.
A Call to Adventure
There was turmoil in the kingdom of Iran. One day, at the court of the mighty King Khosrow, news arrived that the borderlands of Iran were being ravaged by wild boars that destroyed crops and terrorized the people. The king sought a hero who would venture into the wild forests of Turan to rid the land of this menace. Many warriors hesitated, for it was a perilous task that could lead to certain death. But among them stood Bijan, a courageous and skilled knight of royal blood.
"Let me go, my king," Bijan declared boldly. "I will rid the land of this danger and restore peace to your people."
King Khosrow agreed but warned him, "Beware, Bijan. The lands of Turan are treacherous, and their king, Afrasiab, is cunning and ruthless. Do not stray from your path."
And so, Bijan set out on his quest, accompanied by his trusted guide, the wise warrior Gorgin. Together, they crossed rivers, climbed mountains, and traveled through dark forests until they reached the borderlands of Turan, where the boars ran rampant. With unparalleled strength and bravery, Bijan battled the wild beasts, and soon, the land was free from their terror.
The villagers rejoiced and celebrated their newfound hero. However, it was during this time of celebration that Bijan's fate took an unexpected turn.
The Encounter with Manijeh
One evening, as Bijan rested by a serene lake, he saw something extraordinary. Across the waters stood a beautiful maiden, her features illuminated by the moonlight, her eyes like stars in the night sky. It was Manijeh, the daughter of Afrasiab, who had come with her companions to celebrate the festival of spring.
Manijeh, too, caught sight of Bijan. There was something different about him, something noble and courageous that drew her closer. "Who are you?" she asked, her voice as gentle as the breeze.
"I am Bijan, a knight of Iran," he replied, unable to tear his gaze away from her beauty. They spoke for hours by the lake, sharing tales of their lands, their dreams, and their hopes. As the night grew deeper, they felt an unspoken bond form between them, one that transcended borders and enmity.
"I know that you are my father's enemy," Manijeh whispered, "but my heart tells me otherwise."
"Then let our hearts be the judge," Bijan replied, taking her hand in his. And thus began a love that defied the very fabric of their worlds.
Captured by Fate
Their secret meetings continued until, one fateful day, Afrasiab's spies reported that his daughter was consorting with an enemy knight. Furious, Afrasiab ordered his soldiers to capture Bijan. They ambushed him during one of his meetings with Manijeh, binding him in chains and dragging him to the dungeons.
When Manijeh pleaded with her father to release Bijan, Afrasiab’s heart hardened. "He is our enemy, and he shall suffer!" the king declared. Bijan was then thrown into a pit deep in the ground, left to die alone in darkness and despair.
However, Manijeh's love was undeterred. Night after night, she secretly brought food and water to Bijan, weaving tales of hope and whispering words of comfort through the darkness.
"You must not lose faith," she told him. "I will find a way to free you."
And so, their love endured even in the depths of captivity, shining as brightly as the stars that guided them through the darkness.
The King’s Messenger
Back in Iran, King Khosrow began to worry about Bijan's absence. He summoned Gorgin, who had returned without his companion. "Where is Bijan?" the king demanded.
Fearing for his life, Gorgin confessed, "He is a prisoner in the land of Turan, captured by King Afrasiab."
King Khosrow immediately sought the wisdom of the great hero Rostam, a warrior of unmatched strength and bravery. "Go and rescue Bijan," he commanded. "Bring him back, for his spirit is too noble to be caged."
Rostam disguised himself as a merchant and traveled to Turan, carrying with him goods that caught the eyes of Afrasiab’s people. It was during this time that he learned of Bijan’s captivity and Manijeh’s unwavering devotion. With the help of Manijeh, Rostam located the pit where Bijan was imprisoned.
"Bijan, my brother, it is I, Rostam!" he called out. "I have come to free you."
Tears filled Bijan’s eyes as he saw his rescuer. "Thank you, Rostam. But I cannot leave without Manijeh."
Rostam nodded, understanding the bond that had formed between them. Together, they pulled Bijan out of the pit and fled under the cover of night, with Manijeh joining them in their escape.
