Matěj pressed his shoulder to the cold battlement stone and listened as winter wind clawed at the towers. Torchlight skittered across the roofs; smoke and wood ash lingered on the air. He drew the night into his chest and felt the castle’s slow, guarded breath—beneath it, a thin sound: worry.

Perched above the forests of Bohemia, Karlštejn Castle guarded the empire's most sacred relics and the Crown Jewels. Built by Emperor Charles IV, it was a sanctuary where trust was currency and betrayal a ruinous debt.

When a sealed parchment arrived at council that night, the warning it bore turned suspicion into action. Lord Petr of Rožmberk read the message: a traitor lurked in their midst. The court stirred. Matěj felt the hunt begin.

Shadows in the Castle

The winter wind rattled the iron-bound windows of the great hall. Torches threw shadows that trembled across the stone. The Emperor's advisors, lords, and knights had assembled; their faces were tight with concern.

“A traitor lurks among us,” Lord Petr announced, voice low and certain. He unfurled a parchment sealed with the imperial crest. “This letter was intercepted before it could reach the border. It speaks of an imminent plot—an attempt to steal the Crown Jewels.”

A murmur spread.

Lord Jan scoffed. “Nonsense. Karlštejn is impenetrable.”

“And yet,” Countess Alžběta said, “someone has betrayed the Emperor’s trust.”

At the far end, Sir Matěj, captain of the guards, listened. He had faced enemies beyond the walls, but never a danger born inside the stone.

The Emperor’s gaze cut the room. “Find the traitor before he strikes,” he ordered.

Matěj stood. “I will see to it personally, Your Majesty.”

The hunt had begun. He began by checking the inner kitchens and stables, questioning those with the closest access.

A Warning in the Dark

Long after council, Karlštejn remained restless. Footsteps echoed, torches flickered, whispers clung to the corridors.

Matěj patrolled with sharpened senses. Snow dusted the battlements; the kitchens sent scents of burning wood into the night. He paused at each arrow slit, tracing faint boot marks in the fresh snow and listening for voices folded into the wind. The torches made islands of amber; beyond them, the corridors drank sound and hid footsteps, turning every whisper into a question. He felt the weight of the castle’s history press under his feet, and with it a new, careful patience.

A figure stood in the shadows near the chapel entrance, then vanished into an alcove. Matěj pursued, boots cracking on the stone, but found only a scrap of parchment on the floor.

He picked it up. The ink was fresh.

“Periculum”—Danger.

Matěj’s hand tightened on the note. This was no idle threat. It was a promise.

The Mask of Deception

By morning, a dagger engraved with Lord Vojtěch's sigil was found near the chapel. Summoned to the hall, Vojtěch protested fiercely.

“This is madness,” he said. “I have served faithfully.”

Matěj examined him. Ambition showed in Vojtěch’s eyes, but not guilt.

“And yet,” Matěj said, holding the dagger, “this was found where only the most trusted should tread.”

Vojtěch’s jaw tightened. “Someone is trying to frame me.”

Matěj weighed the signs. If Vojtěch was innocent, the betrayer still moved unseen.

A horn broke the hall's hush. A rider at the gate brought urgent news: “The Emperor is in danger.”

In the dead of night, Sir Matěj cautiously patrols the stone corridors of Karlštejn Castle. A shadowy figure slips behind a pillar, vanishing into the darkness, leaving only whispers of treachery in the air.

The Night of Betrayal

Night thickened. Guards watched every passage, the castle a taut net.

Then an explosion tore the lower halls. Smoke and fire sent guards scattering—the perfect distraction.

Matěj ran to the chapel entrance, boots thudding on the wet stone. He smelled smoke and the metallic tang of panic; the air tasted of cold and iron. The door stood ajar, hinges smoking from the nearby blaze. Inside, a figure bent over the jewel chest, the Imperial Crown flashing torchlight against gold and velvet. A stray curtain trembled, and Matěj caught the faint scrape of cloth where someone had moved too quickly.

Matěj stepped forward, sword raised. “Turn and face me, coward.”

The figure turned and removed a mask.

Gasps rose.

It was Lord Petr of Rožmberk.

“You?” Matěj asked.

Petr’s face was calm. “Karlštejn deserves a stronger ruler. The empire is weak under Charles IV.”

“You mean you deserve the throne,” Matěj said.

Petr lunged. Blades met; sparks flew. They fought until Matěj’s blade found its mark.

Petr collapsed, blood dark across his tunic. He whispered, “You were always a fool,” and went still.

The traitor was dead.

In the sacred chapel of Karlštejn Castle, Sir Matěj battles a masked traitor in a fierce duel. Sparks fly from their clashing blades, as the fate of the Crown Jewels—and the empire—hangs in the balance.

The Emperor’s Judgment

By dawn the castle quieted. The Emperor, weary, sat upon his throne.

“Lord Petr was my most trusted advisor,” Charles IV said. “His betrayal wounds more than any blade.”

Matěj knelt. “He sought your throne. He would have undone the empire.”

The Emperor nodded. “Justice has been served. For your loyalty, you shall be rewarded.”

Charles IV declared, “From this day forth, Sir Matěj shall be known as Guardian of Karlštejn.”

The title was an honor and a burden.

Yet Matěj felt, as he scanned the hall, that another betrayal might wait beyond the horizon.

For at Karlštejn, echoes of deceit never fully faded.

At dawn, inside Karlštejn Castle’s grand hall, Emperor Charles IV passes judgment on the fallen traitor. Sir Matěj kneels before the throne, receiving the title of Guardian of Karlštejn as the court watches in solemn silence.

Why it matters

When trust is the currency of power, its theft costs more than treasure: it costs the stability of peoples and the safety of those who keep the peace. Matěj’s choice—risking himself to stop a single betrayal—protects many who cannot guard themselves. The cost of vigilance is loneliness and perpetual readiness, and in a realm shaped by oaths and crowns, that burden keeps a fragile order from unravelling into violence.
